The Chevrolet Silverado

Car Guide, citing Automotive News Data Center, ranks the Silverado Canada's fifth best-selling vehicle of 2025 (54,068 units). Its key changed in four steps: Passlock on the ignition cylinder (2005–2006), PASS-Key III+ transponder keys (2008–2013), an optional Keyless Access proximity fob with the new 2019 1500, then push-button start only with a CR2450 fob (2023, 2024 and 2026 manuals).[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Canada changes the answer twice. In the 2014 and 2017–2021 manuals, a turn-key truck with no recognized key goes to the dealer under Canadian regulations, and on 2019–2022 LTD Keyless Access trucks the fob self-learn is not available in Canada. And the tailgate-switch recall reaches 2020–2024 Silverado 1500s in Canada, while the U.S. recall covers HD trucks only.[10][11][19][5][6][12][21][13][14][15]

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says

Blade inside the Keyless Access fob (2019–2026)

A release button on the side of the fob frees the mechanical key; never pull it without pressing the button. The 2020, 2021, 2022 1500 LTD, 2023 and 2024 manuals call it a driver-door and glove-box key, and elsewhere say it "can be used for all locks"; the 2026 manual says all locks.[6][12][21][7][8][9]

Door key cylinder (2019–2026)

The 2019–2026 manuals say to use the key in the driver door, or the passenger door if equipped. In the 2020 and 2026 manuals, a cylinder turned with the wrong key, or a key not fully inserted, spins freely so the lock cannot be forced; the manual gives a reset procedure using the correct key.[5][6][9]

Dead fob: getting it started (2019–2026)

Open the door with the blade. If the display shows NO REMOTE DETECTED (2020) or NO KEY FOUND, REPLACE BATTERY IN KEY (2026), set the fob in the backup spot (the lower compartment without bucket seats, otherwise the pocket or insert), select P or N, hold the brake and push ENGINE START/STOP.[6][9]

Which fob battery: CR2032 or CR2450

CR2032 in the 2006, 2007 Classic, 2008, 2012–2014 and 2017 to 2022 1500 LTD manuals; CR2450 in the 2023, 2024 and 2026 manuals. On the 2026 fob, the blade is the tool for removing the battery cover.[2][16][3][18][4][10][11][19][5][6][12][21][7][8][9]

Tailgate that will not open (2020, 2026)

No trunk means no interior trunk release. Power-release tailgates open in Park from two presses of the fob's tailgate button, the handle touch pad after unlocking, or the centre-stack switch. A low or disconnected battery keeps the electric latch shut; with a dead battery the manual says it "can be opened manually" and names the dealer or Roadside Assistance.[6][9]

All keys lost: what the manuals say

PASS-Key III+ trucks (2008–2013): a dealer or "a locksmith who can service PASS-Key III+". 2014 and 2017–2021 turn-key trucks with no recognized key: the dealer, under Canadian regulations. 2019–2022 LTD Keyless Access: no self-learn in Canada. 2023–2026: new remote keys through the dealer. A bar-coded key tag lets a dealer or qualified locksmith make new keys.[3][10][11][19][5][6][12][21][7][9]

Keys locked in the cab; keypad entry

The 2006 and 2010 manuals warn that keys locked inside may mean damaging the truck to get in, and point to Roadside Assistance and OnStar. The 2021 and 2026 manuals show no keypad entry; the only four-digit keypad they describe is the infotainment Valet Mode.[2][17][12][9]

Known problems and what owners report

Stiff keys and failing door locks (GM bulletins; U.S. data)

PI0091B: debris in the groove of 2008–2016 GM "side mill" keys can stop them entering or turning. PIT5233D: a key that resists turning from OFF on a 2014–2018 truck without keyless start is "normal". NHTSA latch/lock complaints (U.S. data): 79 for 2007–2013 trucks, 5 for 2014–2018; 2008 owners describe power door-lock actuators failing on three or all four doors.[38][39][40][41]

Smart-fob faults, 2019–2026 (GM bulletins)

PIT5860B (North America): keyless-start trucks from 2019 to the 2022 LTD can falsely enter fob programming through the driver-door lock-cylinder circuit; symptoms include no crank and a "Remote Learn Pending" message. 22-NA-236 (Canada included): 2022 1500 New and 2023 fobs will not program until the body control module is updated. PIT6456A: a 2023–2026 fob with dead buttons but working passive entry is out of sync; GM says "Do not replace Key fobs".[42][43][44]

Tailgate dropping open on its own (U.S. data; owner forum)

NHTSA complaints on 2019–2021 trucks (U.S. data) describe tailgates opening parked or moving; a 2021 owner on chevroletforum.com (owner forum) found water and green corrosion in the switches. In the U.S., 2020–2023 1500s built before mid-2023 plant breakpoints get bulletin 23-NA-112 ("U.S. and Mexico Only"), not a recall. PIT6435 (Canada included): on 2023–2025 trucks, water in the switch can drain the battery.[45][46][47][48][49][50]

Theft and key security

Équité Association counts the Silverado and Sierra together; by number of thefts they make every Canadian top-10 list from 2020 to 2024, and each list names an older truck (the 1999–2006 generation, or model year 2005 or 2006). Model year 2006 was #7 in 2024 (1,192 thefts). Ontario lists them only in 2020 (#5, model year 2017) and on the undated "2021" list (#8, 1999–2006 generation). Équité's Bryan Gast told Global News that in Alberta, older models "are more frequently targeted for use in domestic crimes, then discarded".[51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61]

GM's Canada-only bulletin 10-00-89-010B requires government photo ID with registration or ownership papers before a dealer key-code lookup. A June 2025 U.S. class action (allegation only) lists the Silverado among GM models it says are open to fob cloning and OBD-II key programming.[62][63]

Chevrolet Silverado keys — questions

Where is the mechanical key on a Silverado smart fob?

On 2019–2026 Keyless Access fobs, press the release button on the side and slide the blade out. It fits the driver door, and a passenger-door cylinder if fitted. Trucks with a separate key and remote use that key instead.

How do you start a Silverado that shows NO REMOTE DETECTED?

Open the door with the blade, put the fob in the backup spot (lower compartment, or the pocket or insert with bucket seats), select P or N, hold the brake and push ENGINE START/STOP. The fob battery is a CR2032 on 2019 to 2022 1500 LTD trucks, and a CR2450 in the 2023, 2024 and 2026 manuals.

Is a Canadian Silverado 1500 included in the tailgate-switch recall?

Yes, 2020–2024 1500s are: recalls 2024-061 (2020–2023) and 2025-350 (2023–2024) replace the exterior tailgate switch, where water can unlatch the tailgate while parked. HD trucks are recalled too; the U.S. recall covers HD trucks only.
