The Honda Civic
Honda Canada says the Civic was Canada's best-selling car for 2025 (31,054 sold) and for "26 of the past 28 years". It dates the Civic's 8th to 11th generations from 2006, 2012, 2016 and 2022; 2005 is the last 7th-generation year.[1][2]
The key changed three times: from a separate remote (2005) to a remote in the key head (2006, 2008 and 2012 manuals, not every trim), to a smart key on upper trims from 2014, to push-button start on every Canadian sedan trim in the 2022 and 2024 spec sheets.[3][4][5][6][8][9][11][12]
Which key does your Honda Civic use?
| Model years | Key | Start | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2005 (7th gen) | Transponder master and valet keys; separate remote if equipped | Turned key | The trunk has a key cylinder.[3] |
| 2006–2011 (8th gen) | Remote-head key on most trims; plain key on DX (not Canadian DX-G); gray valet key | Turned key | The valet key cannot open the trunk.[4][5] |
| 2012–2013 (9th gen) | 2012 manual: black master keys, remote not on all models; gray valet key | Turned key | The valet key starts the car but cannot open the trunk.[6] |
| 2014–2015 (9th gen) | 2014 manual: plain key, remote-head key or smart remote | Turned key, or push button with smart entry | First smart key; in Canada (2014) on EX and trims built on it, Si and Hybrid.[7][8] |
| 2016–2021 (10th gen) | Canada 2016 sedan: remote key on DX, LX; proximity key on EX, EX-T, Touring | 2016 sedan: DX/LX turned key; EX and up push button | The 2016 manual lists no valet key or trunk key cylinder.[9][10] |
| 2022–2026 (11th gen) | Keyless remote with built-in key; proximity key on every Canadian sedan trim (2022, 2024) | Push button only | Driver's keyhole hidden behind the door handle.[11][12][13] |

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says
Hidden keyhole (2022–2026)
Press the fob's release button and pull out the built-in key; the 2022 sedan and 2025 hatchback manuals say it can unlock the doors when the fob battery is weak. The keyhole is on the back of the driver's door handle; insert the key from below (2022, 2024). The 2025–2026 manuals add: pull and hold the outer handle first.[13][14][16][20][21]
Metal key and keypad (2005–2022 manuals)
On a 2005 with power locks, the key unlocks only the driver's door. The 2014 and 2016 smart remotes hold a built-in key (slide the release knob to pull it out); in a 2016 sedan, turn it once for the driver's door, again within a few seconds for the rest. The 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2022 manuals describe no door keypad.[3][4][5][6][7][10][13]
Weak fob battery, push-button start (2014–2026)
2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024 manuals: touch the H logo on the fob to the flashing ENGINE START/STOP button, then press the brake and the button within 10 seconds. 2025–2026 manuals: press the button first, touch it with the H logo while it flashes (about 30 seconds), then press the brake and the button while it stays on (about 10 seconds).[7][10][13][15][17][19]
Fob batteries (2005–2026)
2005 separate remote: CR2025. Remote-head keys: CR1616 in the 2006, 2008 and 2012 manuals, then CR1620 in 2014 and 2016. Smart remotes: CR2032 in the 2014, 2016 and 2022 manuals and the 2025 hatchback manual.[3][4][5][6][7][10][13][22]
Trunk release and valet key (2005–2014)
The trunk release sits left of the driver's seat (2005, 2008, 2012, 2014 manuals); in 2005 and 2008 the master key can lock it. Valet keys cannot open the trunk (2006–2012). On a 2014 smart-key car, locking the release also disables the fob's trunk button and the trunk-lid button. The 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2014 manuals each describe an emergency release lever inside the trunk.[3][4][5][6][7]
Trunk, hatch or fuel door will not open (2016–2026)
The 2016 sedan manual describes no trunk key cylinder; if the trunk will not open, remove the cover with a key, pull the release lever, refit the cover. 2022 and 2025 sedans: remove the cover and pull the release cord. 2025 hatchback: remove the cover on the back of the hatch with a flat-tip screwdriver, then push the hatch while sliding the lever. The 2022 fuel door locks with the doors; if it sticks, open the trunk and pull the release cord.[10][13][18][24]
Fob inside, or after a battery disconnect (2016–2026)
2022 manual: without keyless access, the doors and trunk will not lock with the remote inside; with it, lockout protection unlocks the doors if the car cannot detect the remote, relocking after 15 seconds if no door opens. Canadian models (2016 sedan and 2025 hatchback manuals): hold the brake before the first start after the car battery has been disconnected.[10][13][23]
Recalls involving locks, latches or keys
| Recall | Model years | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| None found | 2005–2026 | No recall in the Transport Canada or NHTSA databases touches the locks, latches, keys, fobs, immobilizer, trunk/hatch or hood latch for these years (as of September 29, 2026).[25][26] |
| 2010-264 (Transport Canada); 10V364000 (U.S.) | 2003 | The ignition interlock lever can wear, so the key can come out of an automatic not in Park (rollaway risk). Fix: new interlock pin and lever.[27][28] |

Known problems and what owners report
Front doors will not unlock in freezing weather, 2012 sedan (U.S. data)
American Honda S/B 12-016, 2012 Civic 4-door, all trims: in freezing weather the front doors will not unlock with the remote or key because "Moisture in the lock cable freezes." Fix: dry and lubricate the cable.[29]
Fob ignored, alarm or trunk acting up, 2016–2020 (U.S. data)
In NHTSA complaints, 2016–2020 owners describe the alarm going off by itself and the fob not responding, so the key was needed to get in; two blame the body control module. NHTSA's Civic manufacturer-communication list for 2016–2021 includes no Honda bulletin on the body control module or fob recognition. Owners of 2017–2019 cars report the trunk opening by itself; a CivicX owner-forum thread is titled "Trunk opens spontaneously / alarm sounds". American Honda S/B 22-013 covers broken trunk springs on 2016–20 Coupes, Si included.[30][31][32][33]
One fob at delivery, and fuel door clips, 2022–2025 (U.S. data)
American Honda S/B 21-079: some 2022 Civics built in Canada at HCM shipped with one fob and two emergency keys; the campaign programs a new fob that takes the second emergency key. A 2025 ServiceNews reports broken fuel door clips on 2022–25 cars, which "could be" from owners pulling a fuel door that Walk Away Auto Lock has locked.[34][35][36]
Blinking immobilizer light, no start, 2001–05 (U.S. data)
ServiceNews A15120F (2015): if the engine cranks but will not start with the immobilizer light blinking, check for loose alternator bolts, which can damage the ECM/PCM.[37]
Theft and key security
Équité Association ranked the Civic #3 in Ontario for 2024 (1,113 thefts) and #5 in Canada (1,797). 2019 was the Civic model year most often stolen in Ontario on the 2020 and 2022–2024 lists. On the 2024 lists more Civics are covered by insurance than any other listed model, and its theft rate (0.35% Ontario, 0.26% Canada) is the lowest or second-lowest of the ten.[38][39][40][41][42]
Honda Canada's 2016, 2022 and 2024 spec sheets list an immobilizer on every sedan trim. The U.S. vulnerability database lists two Civic fob replay flaws, described as door-open or unlock only: the 2018 Civic (CVE-2022-27254) and the 2012 Civic (CVE-2021-46145).[9][11][12][43][44]
Honda Civic keys — questions
Where is the door keyhole on a 2022–2026 Civic?
Behind the driver's door handle (2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026 manuals). Pull the built-in key out of the fob and insert it from below the handle; the 2025 and 2026 manuals add: pull and hold the outer handle first.
How do you start a push-button Civic when the fob battery is weak?
Touch the H logo on the fob to the flashing ENGINE START/STOP button, then press the brake and the button within 10 seconds (2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024 manuals). The 2025 and 2026 manuals change the order: press the button first, touch it with the H logo while it flashes, then press the brake and the button.
Is there a lock or key recall on the Civic?
The Transport Canada and NHTSA (U.S.) recall databases list no recall touching the locks, latches, keys, fobs or immobilizer of a 2005–2026 Civic, as of September 29, 2026. The nearest is recall 2010-264 (U.S. 10V364000) on the 2003 Civic: the ignition interlock lever can wear, so the key can come out of an automatic not in Park.
