Which key your Grand Caravan takes by year, what to do when the fob dies or will not come out of the ignition, and the ignition recall to check.

The Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan ran to the 2020 model year; for 2021 FCA Canada launched the Chrysler Grand Caravan "exclusively for Canada". FCA Canada reported 51,513 Dodge Grand Caravans sold in 2016 and 6,017 Chrysler Grand Caravans in 2025.[12][1][2][3]

Three key systems are in scope: a metal key with a Sentry Key transponder ("if equipped" in the 2007 manual) on the 2005–2007 RS; a fob pushed into a Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) and turned on the 2008–2020 RT; and a proximity fob with push-button start on the 2021–2026 Chrysler, standard on the 2021 base model.[4][5][6][1][13]

The biggest key-related recall is 2015-250: on 2008–2010 vans the WIN could let the key slip from ON to ACC while driving.[18][19]

Which key does your Dodge Grand Caravan use?

Model yearsKeyStartWorth knowing
2005–2007 (RS)Metal key with Sentry Key transponder ("if equipped" in 2007); remote if equippedTurn keyOwner adds keys with 2 valid keys, up to 8. Remote: CR2032.[4][5]
2008–2020 (RT)Fob with Integrated Key (FOBIK), emergency key in the backFob pushed into the WIN and turnedCR2032. 2008 manual: owner adds keys with 2 valid ones; from 2011 the manuals refer to a dealer.[6][7][12]
2021–2026 (Chrysler)Proximity fob with emergency keyPush-button START/STOPCR2032. Programming "may be performed by an authorized dealer"; a fob from another vehicle cannot be reprogrammed to it.[1][13][16][17]

Not sure which generation you have? The model year is on your ownership (vehicle permit).

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says

Emergency key inside the fob (2008–2026)

RT: slide the latch at the top of the fob and pull the key out of the rear. Chrysler: press the release button on the side and pull it out. Both generations' manuals say it gets you in when the fob or the van's battery is dead.[6][12][13][17]

Door key and the alarm (2008–2026)

Only the driver's door has a key cylinder (2008 manual), and the 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2026 manuals say it cannot arm or disarm the alarm. On a 2020 van, put the fob in the ignition and turn it to ON/RUN to disarm.[6][10][12][13][17]

Fob stuck in the ignition (RT)

The 2011 and 2012 manuals say a low or dead van battery leaves the fob "locked in the ignition": do not force it; jump-start or charge the battery. A Key Ignition Park Interlock fault also traps it until serviced (2017).[7][8][10]

Starting with a dead fob (2021–2026)

Passive Entry stops once the fob battery is depleted, so use the emergency key in the driver's door. Then hold the nose of the fob (opposite the emergency key) against START/STOP and push (2021, 2024 and 2026 manuals).[13][16][17]

Fob batteries (2006–2026)

One CR2032 in the 2006 and 2007 RS manuals, the 2008, 2011, 2018 and 2020 RT manuals, and the 2021, 2024 and 2026 Chrysler manuals. The 2020 manual says to change it only when the cluster shows "Key Fob Low Battery".[4][5][6][7][11][12][13][16][17]

Liftgate will not open (2006–2026)

RS: the ignition key opens the liftgate lock; without power locks, only the key does. RT: unlock it, then push the handle under the licence-plate bar (2017); the 2016 and 2017 manuals describe an emergency latch release behind a snap-in cover on the trim panel. Chrysler: two fob presses within five seconds, the overhead button or the outside handle; the 2021–2024 and 2026 manuals describe no inside emergency release.[4][5][9][10][13][14][15][16][17]

Keys locked inside (2007, 2021–2026)

Chrysler (2021 manual): after a lock request with a door open, the van unlocks if it finds a fob inside and none outside within 1.5 m, but not if the lock knobs were used or after a third lock attempt with the door switch. The 2021–2024 and 2026 manuals describe no exterior keypad. RS (2007): a door shut with the plunger down locks.[13][14][15][16][17][5]

RecallModel yearsWhat it covers
Canada 2015-250 / U.S. 14V-3732008–2010The WIN may let the key move from ON to ACC while driving, cutting the engine, power steering and brakes and disabling the airbags. Dealers fit a revised WIN and fob; until then, remove everything from the fob ring.[18][19]
Canada 2011-096 / U.S. 11V-1392010The same key displacement; dealers replace the WIN. Superseded by 2015-250.[20][21][18]
Canada 2012-155 / U.S. 12V-1912012, power liftgateThe right-side pinch sensor may not work as intended, so more force is needed to stop the liftgate near the end of closing.[22][23]
Canada 2015-423 / U.S. 15V-5952016Loose hood striker fasteners could let the hood open suddenly.[24][25]
Canada 2018-079 / U.S. 18V-0982017 (listed as Caravan)A faulty brake switch can let the shifter leave PARK in RUN without the brake pressed.[26][27]

Known problems and what owners report

Sliding doors stuck closed or buzzing, 2015–2019 (U.S. data)

TSB 23-001-25 (2015–2017 vans with power locks, built May 1, 2015 – January 9, 2017): sliding-door locks stop working or buzz loudly because of the lock actuator; the doors still lock and unlock by hand. Coverage: 15 years / 150,000 miles, citing Canada SAB 2021-24. TSB 23-003-25 (2017–2019 vans built from January 10, 2017): 10 years / 100,000 miles, Canada SAB 2025-03.[29][30][31]

Fob bulletins: WIN replacement (2014) and campaign H-30 (2008) (U.S. data)

On 2014 RT 3.6L vans built on or before November 21, 2013, the original fobs do not work properly after a WIN replacement. The fix is PCM software; if the WIN was replaced before that update, the original fobs must be replaced. Campaign H-30 (2008, not a safety recall): remotes could separate from the valet key.[32][33][34]

What owners report to NHTSA (U.S. data)

Investigation PE21-016 covered 364 complaints that 2016 Grand Caravan or Town & Country sliding doors could not be opened; a loud buzzing usually came first, and it closed in 2022 citing the warranty extension. Other themes: 2008 fobs that will not release in PARK, WIN-related stalling, and 2005 power locks that quit.[35][36]

RU-platform fob and liftgate bulletins (U.S. data, Chrysler Voyager)

Indexed for the U.S. Voyager (Grand Caravan not named): a "Key Fob Battery Low" message (codes B1A10/B1A11 mean fob voltage of 2.3 V or lower), "Key not Detected" or weak remote range (inspect the remote start antenna at the RF hub), and a sticking liftgate latch fixed by adjusting the striker.[37][38][39]

Theft and key security

Équité Association ranked the Town & Country / Grand Caravan / Caravan / Voyager series 8th on its Canada top-10 list labelled 2020 (most common model year stolen: 2017). It is absent from the Ontario list labelled 2020 and from the Canada and Ontario lists by number of thefts for 2022–2024.[40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]

The bulletins NHTSA indexes for the 2020–2025 U.S. Voyager include no RF-hub anti-theft bulletin.[48]

Dodge Grand Caravan keys — questions

Where is the emergency key in a Grand Caravan fob?

On a 2008–2020 Dodge, slide the latch at the top of the fob and pull the key out of the rear. On a 2021–2026 Chrysler, press the release button on the side. The 2008 manual says only the driver's door has a key cylinder, and the 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2026 manuals say that cylinder cannot arm or disarm the alarm.

How do I start a Grand Caravan when the fob or battery is dead?

On a 2021–2026 Chrysler, get in with the emergency key, then hold the nose of the fob against START/STOP and push. On the Dodge, the 2011 and 2012 manuals say a low or dead van battery locks the fob in the ignition: do not force it; jump-start or charge the battery. Both fobs take a CR2032.

Does the WIN ignition recall apply to my Grand Caravan?

Recall 2015-250 (U.S. 14V-373) covers 2008–2010 vans whose WIN could let the key slip from ON to ACC while driving. Dealers fit a revised WIN and fob. As of September 29, 2026, the Transport Canada database lists no lock, key or fob recall for the 2021–2026 Chrysler.
