Which key your Escape uses by year, what to do when the fob dies or a door will not open, and the latch recalls worth checking.

The Ford Escape

The Escape was Canada's best-selling utility vehicle in 2014, with 52,198 sold, and the ninth best-selling vehicle overall in 2025, with 32,956 (third-party sales data).[14][15]

The Escape has had four North American generations (third-party dates): 2001–2007, 2008–2012, 2013–2019 and 2020–2026. The key went from a blade key plus separate remote, to a remote-head key (2008), to an optional push-button Intelligent Access (IA) fob with a hidden blade (2013), to a flip key or passive fob (2020, 2021 and 2024 manuals).[16][1][4][7][11][12][13]

The 2005, 2013 and 2024 manuals say the engine starts only with a coded key programmed to the vehicle. The lockout records that matter most are the 2013–2015 door-latch recall and Ford bulletins (published in the U.S.) on 2020–2024 doors that will not open from outside after a hard slam.[1][7][13][21][31][32]

Which key does your Ford Escape use?

Model yearsKeyStartWorth knowing

2013–2019Remote-head key, or IA fob with hidden bladeTurn key; push-button with IADead-fob spot: steering column (2013–2016), then a tray (2017–2018).[7][8][9][10][16]
2020–2026Flip key, or IA passive fob with hidden bladeTurn key (flip); push-button (passive)Key types from the 2020, 2021 and 2024 manuals. From the 2021 manual, only a dealer programs remotes.[11][12][13][16]

Not sure which generation you have? The model year is on your ownership (vehicle permit).

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says

Hidden blade and the driver door (2012–2024)

On the IA fob (2013, 2017), the slide on the back releases the blade, which opens the driver door when the fob battery is low. On the 2024 passive key, push the release button and pull the blade out. 2020: turn it toward the rear in the driver door handle lock cylinder. In 2012, the key in the door cylinder unlocks the driver's door only; "All other doors will remain locked".[6][7][9][11][13]

Dead fob: where it goes to start (2013–2024)

2013–2016: hold the fob next to the symbol on the steering column. 2017–2018: place it in the middle of the tray. 2020, 2021 and 2024: lift the mat off the backup location and set the fob there, buttons facing up (2021, 2024). Then press the start button. In 2024 the alarm disarms once the vehicle is switched on.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Fob battery by year

CR2032: the 2005 remote, the 2008–2012 remote-head key, the keys and fobs in the 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018 manuals, and the flip key (2020, 2021, 2024). CR2450: the passive fob in the 2020, 2021 and 2024 manuals.[1][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Liftgate will not open (2008–2024)

The 2008, 2013 and 2024 manuals describe no interior emergency liftgate release. 2008: press unlock twice within 3 seconds to open the glass. 2013 with IA: press the release on top of the pull-cup handle with the fob within 1 m. 2024 power liftgate, the manual's checks: freezing, parking downhill, the liftgate setting, Park and battery voltage.[4][7][13]

Door keypad code (2006–2024)

The five-digit factory code is on the owner's wallet card in the glove box, or available from a dealer (2006, 2013). Seven wrong codes disable the keypad for one minute (2007). In the 2021 manual, the factory code can be shown on the display, which needs two programmed IA keys. Some 2023s were built without a keypad, and on 2024 it is a dealer-installed option (Ford bulletins published in the U.S.).[2][3][7][12][38][39]

Spare keys and all keys lost (2005–2024)

Owners can program a spare key themselves only with two working coded keys (2005, 2013, 2020 manuals). The 2021 and 2024 manuals send remote programming to a dealer. With all keys lost, the 2005, 2008 and 2013 manuals say to have the vehicle towed to a dealer. From 2008 the key cut information is on a security label.[1][4][7][11][12][13]

Fob or key left inside (2005, 2013)

2013 with IA: after a door closes, the vehicle searches for a fob inside and unlocks if it finds one. 2005: smart unlocking re-unlocks the driver's door if it is power-locked while open with the key in the ignition.[1][7]

Known problems and what owners report

Door handle and lock bulletins, 2020–2025 (U.S. data)

TSB 22-2246 and SSM 52633 (2020–2024): an inertia lock in the exterior handle can engage when a door is closed or opened with excessive force, so it will not open from outside. Program 20B56 (2020): a binding interior-handle cable can stop the door opening from inside. SSM 53634 (2020–2025): a hand on the interior handle can push the lock toggle and lock the driver door, which Ford calls operating as designed.[31][32][33][34]

Heavy front doors, 2020–2023 (U.S. data)

Program 23B56: cracked check-arm reinforcement welds make front doors much harder to open or close; the fix is a reinforcement kit or a full door replacement. The U.S. owner letter keeps the program open until May 31, 2027.[35]

Liftgate hard to open or close, 2008–2019 (U.S. data)

TSB 12-4-3 covers 2008–2011 liftgates that are difficult to open or close, and NHTSA complaints on 2009–2011 Escapes include a failed rear hatch actuator switch. TSB 18-2099 (2017s built on or before September 1, 2017) covers a manual liftgate that is hard to close or a power liftgate that bounces back, and TSB 19-2056 (2017–2019) a power liftgate that bounces back or will not cinch; the fix is adjusting the striker or striker wings.[27][28][29][30]

Key programming errors, 2013–2019 (U.S. data)

SSM 47824 (bulletin text: some 2015–2017): key programming fails with "error 232: Key Table Not Allocated" and the body control module must be replaced. SSM 48619 (bulletin text: some 2013–2016): with keys lost and the perimeter alarm armed, following the workshop manual avoids replacing that module.[36][37]

Theft and key security

The Escape is not on the Équité Association top-10 stolen-vehicle lists for Ontario (2019–2024) or Canada (2020–2024).[40][41][42][43]

Recall 2015-298 notes a 2015 Escape "could be operated without the key", a theft risk. A 2025 Canada Gazette proposal names OBD key programmers, emulators and key-signal relay equipment; it does not name Ford.[20][44]

Ford Escape keys — questions

Where is the hidden key in a Ford Escape fob?

In the 2013 and 2017 manuals, the slide on the back of the Intelligent Access fob releases the blade; in the 2024 manual, push the release button on the passive key and pull the blade out. The blade opens the driver door lock.

How do I start an Escape with a dead fob?

Hold it next to the symbol on the steering column (2013–2016), place it in the middle of the tray (2017–2018), or set it in the backup location under the mat (2020, 2021 and 2024 manuals; buttons up in 2021 and 2024), then press the start button.

Does the door latch recall apply to my Escape?

Transport Canada recall 2016-432 covers 2013–2015 Escapes whose side-door latch may not latch or may unlatch while driving; if a door will not latch, all four latches are replaced. For 2020–2024 doors that will not open from outside, the records are Ford service bulletins published in the U.S.
