Which key your Wrangler takes by year, how to get in and start a JL when the fob dies, and the key bulletins and recalls worth checking.

The Jeep Wrangler

A third-party tally (GoodCarBadCar) adds up to 279,013 Wranglers sold in Canada in 2012–2025; FCA Canada's own count for 2025 is 12,952.[1][2]

Three generations are in scope, each with its own key: the TJ (2005–2006) and JK (2007–2018) use a turn key, and the JL (2018 on, including the 4xe) a flip-key fob with push-button START/STOP. FCA Canada announced both a 2018 JK lineup and the all-new 2018 JL, so a 2018 may have either.[3][4][5][6][7][8][42]

Who can add a key differs too: on the TJ and JK, an owner with two working keys can program another, while the JL manual says fob programming "may be performed by an authorized dealer".[3][4][9][8]

Which key does your Jeep Wrangler use?

Model yearsKeyStartWorth knowing
2005–2006 (TJ)Metal key; Sentry Key transponder if equipped; no remote in the 2005 manualTurn keyOwner can add keys with 2 valid keys, up to 8.[3]
2007–2018 (JK)Transponder key; remote in the key head on equipped trimsTurn keyRemote battery CR2032. 2018 Canada: Sport has manual door locks; Sahara adds remote keyless entry.[4][5][9]
2018–2026 (JL, incl. 4xe)Fob with a flip-out mechanical key (FOBIK)Push-button START/STOPFob battery CR2450. Dealer programming per the manual. Some 2023 builds have manual door locks (JE8).[7][8][15][16][17][42]

Not sure which generation you have? The model year is on your ownership (vehicle permit).

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says

Hidden key and door cylinder (JL, 2018 on)

The fob contains a mechanical key, freed with the Mechanical Key Release Button. It works the doors, the swing gate (if it has a lock), the glove compartment and the console (2019, 2021 and 2024 manuals). The driver's door cylinder "cannot arm or disarm" the alarm; switching the ignition out of OFF disarms it. The 2021 and 2023 manuals describe no exterior door keypad.[8][15][18][19]

Dead fob: getting in and starting (JL, 2018 on)

Passive Entry will not operate once the fob battery is depleted; the mechanical key in the fob locks and unlocks the doors. To start, hold the "nose side" of the fob against START/STOP and push. The 2021, 2023 and 2024 manuals call the nose the side with the mechanical flip key; the 2019 manual says the opposite side. Never press the mechanical key itself on the button.[8][19][18][15][20]

Fob batteries (JK and JL)

JL: CR2450, removed with a small flat-blade screwdriver (2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024 manuals). JK: CR2032; pry the fob halves apart with a flat blade, and the 2008 manual says to remove the screw first if there is one.[15][8][19][18][4][9][21]

Fob locked inside (JL with START/STOP)

With a door open, a lock request makes the Wrangler search for a Passive Entry fob, and the doors unlock if one is inside (FOBIK-Safe). It fails if the doors were locked with the knobs, a second fob is outside within 1.5 m, or the door lock switch was pressed three times before the doors closed.[8]

Swing gate and tailgate (TJ, JK and JL)

JL: unlock it with the key (if the gate has a lock), fob, front-door unlock switch or Passive Entry gate handle, then pull the handle; the 2021 manual describes no inside release. JK: unlock it, then press the button on the gate handle (2008 and 2017 manuals). TJ (2005): the ignition key unlocks the tailgate; lift the latch release to swing it open.[8][4][9][3]

Adding or losing a key (TJ and JK, 2005–2018)

The ignition key also works the doors. With 2 valid keys, an owner can program a blank cut to the key code, up to 8 keys; on the JK the remote is programmed with it. If a JK key is lost, the dealer erases all keys and reprograms the rest. With Sentry Key (standard on the JK, "if equipped" on the TJ), a key cut to fit but not programmed stops the engine after 2 seconds.[3][4][5][9]

No other lock or key recall2005–2026Transport Canada lists 59 Wrangler recalls for these years, none for door locks, latches, keys, the ignition lock, fobs, the swing-gate latch or the hood latch. In NHTSA (U.S.) data, 18V786000 is the only recall filed under the latches/locks/linkages component (as of September 29, 2026).[23][27]

Known problems and what owners report

RF-hub anti-programming update (JL, 2021–2025, U.S. data)

In May–July 2025, FCA issued RF-hub software bulletins for the JL, one per model year 2021–2025 (08-229-25, 08-230-25, 08-231-25, 08-151-25, 08-162-25). They say customers may be concerned about theft because key fobs can be programmed through the RF hub, and the update is "intended to deter an unwanted drive off". NHTSA publishes them; the markets listed include North America.[10][11][12][13][14]

Fob and lock faults (JL, U.S. data)

Codes B1A10–B1A17 mean a low fob battery, and only the battery needs replacing (S2608000010, 2018–2026). For intermittent no-starts with "Key Not Detected", a bulletin says to check for aftermarket low-frequency interference, including LED bulbs (S2008000113, 2018–2021). On 2023 JLs with manual locks built November 1, 2022 – February 28, 2023, the key may not work the door cylinders (TSB 23-057-23). During a 2021 key shortage, JLs shipped from April 12, 2021 with a single FOBIK (08-055-21, covering 2018–2021).[17][28][16][29]

JK hood latches and no-start (U.S. data)

Among NHTSA owner complaints on 2005–2026 Wranglers, 54 mention "hood latch", "hood flew" or "hood flutter", 44 of them on 2007–2017 models: rubber outer latches stretching or snapping at highway speed. FCA bulletins cover JK no-start from an electronic lockup of the WCM/SKREEM module on 2007–2008 (08-007-08) and an "Invalid Key" code on 2013–2014 (08-068-14).[30][31][32]

Theft and key security

Équité Association ranked the Wrangler #8 (2022), #7 (2023) and #4 (2024) in Ontario by number of thefts, with 1,094 stolen in the 2024 ranking, and #6 across Canada in 2024. It is not in Équité's Ontario top 10 by theft frequency for 2023 or 2024.[33][34][35][36][37][38]

Global News reported York Regional Police naming the Wrangler among the five vehicles most often targeted in the region's south end, and police handing out Faraday bags, which block devices that copy fob signals (a general measure, not specific to the Wrangler). ADAC's 2026 European keyless list includes only one Jeep, the Avenger; the Wrangler is not on it.[39][40][41]

Jeep Wrangler keys — questions

Where is the hidden key in a Jeep Wrangler fob?

On the JL (2018 on), the fob holds a mechanical key, freed with the Mechanical Key Release Button. It opens the doors, and the swing gate if the gate has a lock. Unlocking the driver's door with it does not disarm the alarm; switching the ignition out of OFF does. TJ and JK Wranglers (2005–2018) use a turn key instead.

How do you start a Wrangler JL with a dead fob?

Hold the nose of the fob against START/STOP and push. The 2021, 2023 and 2024 manuals call the nose the side with the mechanical flip key; the 2019 manual says the opposite side. Never press the mechanical key itself on the button.

Is there a recall for Wrangler door locks or keys?

Transport Canada lists none for door locks, latches, keys, the ignition lock or fobs on 2005–2026 Wranglers. U.S. recall 18V786000 covers a right rear door latch on 52 four-door 2018s; Transport Canada's Wrangler recall data has no matching record. The 2025 RF-hub updates for 2021–2025 JLs are service bulletins, not recalls.
