The Nissan Rogue
Nissan Canada announced the first Rogue for a September 2007 debut and sold 36,034 Rogues in Canada in 2025. Three generations are covered here: 2008–2013 (Nissan code S35), 2014–2020 (T32) and 2021–2026, refreshed for 2024.[10][16][1][26][27][15]
On a Rogue the key depends on trim, not just year: on 2014–2020 the S has a folding jackknife key under a Transport Canada recall, while SV and higher trims start with a button.[17][12][13]

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says
The mechanical key in the Intelligent Key (2008–2026)
A lock knob on the back of the Intelligent Key releases a mechanical key. From 2014 Nissan describes it for the driver's door, and the 2021 manual says the other doors and the liftgate need the Intelligent Key function.[1][4][7]
Which way the key turns in the door (2008–2026)
2008–2017: forward locks all doors. Rearward once unlocks the driver's door; back to neutral and rearward again within 5 seconds unlocks all doors, and on 2008–2013 the lift gate too. On 2020 the key works only its own door. From 2021 the direction is reversed: rearward locks, forward unlocks.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Starting with a dead Intelligent Key (2008–2026)
2014–2026: in P (from 2021, push the park button), press the brake firmly and touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key until it chimes, then push the switch within 10 seconds while braking. The 2008–2013 manuals give no step-by-step procedure; a key warning light that stays red with the fob aboard means its battery is completely discharged.[1][2][3][4][7][9]
Fob battery by year (2008–2026)
2008–2013: CR1620 in the screw-together keyfob, CR2025 in the Intelligent Key. 2014–2020: CR2032 in the jackknife key; the Intelligent Key takes a CR2025 in 2014 and a CR2032 in 2017 and 2020. 2021–2026: CR2032, and the manuals warn that below -10 °C "the battery of the Intelligent Key may not function properly".[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Opening the liftgate from inside (2008–2026)
The Rogue has a liftgate, not a trunk. 2008–2013, with a dead 12-volt battery: remove the cover inside the lift gate and move the lever as shown. 2014–2020: fold the rear seats, put a tool into the access opening and move the lever to the right. 2021–2026: the same, but move it to the left, then push the liftgate up.[1][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Alarm and keypad (2008–2026)
In the 2021 manual, opening a door, the hood or the liftgate "without using Intelligent Key" sets off the alarm, and the UNLOCK button stops it; in the 2008–2014 manuals, unlocking with the key stops it. The 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2026 manuals describe no door keypad.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Known problems and what owners report
Door locks that stop working (U.S. data)
NHTSA complaints filed under latches/locks/linkages are highest for 2008 (10), 2009 (7), 2015 (5) and 2016 (7); no other year from 2010 to 2025 has more than 3. Owners of 2019–2021 Rogues report door lock actuators that stop locking or unlocking, and Nissan bulletin NTB22-104 gives dealers a diagnostic for a door that will not open or unlock on 2021 (built after June 2021) to 2023 models.[24][31]
Frozen front doors, 2008–2009 (U.S. data)
Owners describe front door handles or lock actuators that froze in cold weather or after freezing rain, so the door would not open from outside.[24]
Power liftgate will not open (U.S. bulletins)
NTB20-050: on 2018–2020 Kick-Motion liftgates built before late 2019, a gate that ignores the fob and switches (code B2409) gets a new control module. For 2021–2022 SV Premium, SL and Platinum, NTB21-081B says to first check that "Power Back Door" is ON in the settings; NTB23-042 replaces the control unit on some 2021–2023 models of those trims built up to early August 2022.[27][30][32]
Key not detected (U.S. data)
Owners of 2015 Rogues report "Key not detected" with the fob on them. Nissan bulletin NTB13-107 says radio interference, for example from an aftermarket alarm, can cause a no-start and "No I-Key Detected". For 2021–2022, NTB20-073 says a replacement Intelligent Key unit must be new and configured before key registration.[24][25][28][29]
Theft and key security
The Rogue is not on any Équité Association top-10 most-stolen list for Ontario (2019–2024) or Canada (2021–2024), and no Nissan model is. Global News's 2022 report on Peel police's Project High 5 named Highlanders, CR-Vs, F150s, Range Rovers and Lexus SUVs, not Nissans.[33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]
Nissan Canada lists the immobilizer and alarm on all 2014 Rogues and a "tamper proof door lock key cylinder" on every 2020 trim. The 2008 manual warns that with the Intelligent Key in range, anyone can press the request switch to lock or unlock.[12][13][1]

Which Rogues does the folding-key recall cover?
In Canada, only a 2014–2020 Rogue S with the jackknife-type folding key: Transport Canada recall 2023-078 affects the S trim only. The blade may not stay locked open, so a bumped key can turn the engine off; the final fix is a spacer in the fob slot.
How do you start a Rogue when the Intelligent Key battery is dead?
On 2014–2026 Rogues with push-button start: in P with the brake pressed firmly, touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key until it chimes, then push the switch within 10 seconds while braking. The Intelligent Key takes a CR2025 in the 2014 manual and a CR2032 in the 2017, 2020 and 2021–2026 manuals.
Where is the hidden key in a Rogue Intelligent Key?
Release the lock knob on the back of the fob to pull out the mechanical key. From 2014 it is for the driver's door. On 2021–2026 it opens only that door and turns the opposite way from the 2008–2017 manuals: rearward locks, forward unlocks.
