The Mazda CX-5
Mazda Canada says the CX-5 debuted in 2012 and passed 300,000 Canadian sales by July 2025, with 28,288 sold in Canada in 2025.[1][2]
It comes in three generations: 2013–2016, 2017–2025, and the 2026 model, which Mazda Canada calls the "third generation" and which reached Canadian retailers in March 2026.[3][4][8][30][35]
Every Canadian owner's manual from 2013 to 2026 describes push-button start and a fob holding a mechanical "auxiliary key". Mazda's U.S. bulletin 01-011/18 (2013–2018 models) says that key "cannot be used to start the engine", and no manual mentions a key cylinder on the liftgate.[5][6][61][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][22]

Dead fob, locked out or trunk stuck: what the owner's manual says
Hidden auxiliary key in the fob (2013–2026)
2013–2015 fobs: pull the key straight out. 2016–2019 fobs and the 2020 Type A fob: press the knob and pull. 2020 Type B fob and 2021: remove the lower cover while pressing the knob. 2022–2025: remove the lower cover while sliding the knob. 2026: remove the cover while pressing the knob. The key locks and unlocks the doors only; Mazda's U.S. bulletin 01-011/18 says it cannot start the engine.[5][7][8][11][12][13][16][17][22]
Opening the driver's door with it
Turn the key toward the front to lock and toward the back to unlock. A brief turn unlocks the driver's door only; holding it about one second unlocks all doors (2013, 2017 and 2020 manuals). The 2026 manual says to pull the door handle while inserting the key. If the theft-deterrent system is armed, unlocking with the key sets off the horn and hazard lights for about 30 seconds (2020 and 2026 manuals).[5][8][11][17]
Starting with a dead fob battery
Press the brake. When the start-button light flashes green, touch the button with the back of the fob, then press it once the light stays green (2013 and 2017 manuals). With the 2020 Type B fob and later, line up the centre of the fob's emblem with the button instead (2020, 2025 and 2026 manuals). With the 2020 Type B fob and later, pressing lock four times in 3 seconds and then holding it turns on a power-saving mode that disables proximity entry and keyless start (2020 and 2026 manuals); Mazda's U.S. bulletin SA-004/25 (2020–2025 with advanced keyless) says this can look like a no-start.[5][8][11][16][17][27]
Fob battery: CR2025 or CR2032
CR2025 for 2013–2019; CR2025 (Type A) or CR2032 (Type B) in the 2020 manual; CR2032 only in the 2021–2026 manuals. Mazda's U.S. bulletin SA-046/19 warns that a CR2025 in the newer fob "may cause a malfunction".[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][26]
Fob locked inside
A key left inside has its functions temporarily suspended to prevent theft; pressing a button on it restores them (2013 and 2026 manuals; the 2026 manual says the unlock button). If the doors are locked with the key inside and everything closed, they unlock again and a beep or the horn warns (2017 and 2026 manuals).[5][8][17]
Liftgate will not open: the inside lever
For a dead battery or electrical fault: on 2013–2016 models, remove the cap on the inside of the liftgate and turn the lever. 2017–2025: remove the same cover and turn the lever, or on power-liftgate models push the liftgate while pressing the lever down. 2026: fold the rear seatbacks, remove the cover and move the lever.[5][8][11][16][17]
Lost key and the key code plate
Keep the key code number plate out of the car; a replacement auxiliary key is made from it (2013 and 2026 manuals). If a key is lost, the dealer resets the codes of the remaining keys, so bring them all (2026 manual). No CX-5 owner's manual from 2013 to 2026 describes an exterior door keypad.[5][6][61][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Known problems and what owners report
Cutting a key when all are lost (U.S. bulletins)
For the new-style 2020 fob, Mazda at first had no way to cut auxiliary keys by code; with every key lost, the fix was to replace the door key cylinder set (SA-045/19, SA-004/20). SA-005/26 (January 2026) supersedes both. In its words, "2019 and newer models require a 10-digit key code", only Mazda-approved machines can use it, and the 5-digit code from the key tag or driver's door lock cylinder "is not sufficient".[23][24][25]
Fob or door handle not responding (U.S. bulletins)
2021 CX-5s built before October 5, 2020: pressure can deform the fob's battery terminals so it will not lock, unlock or start; Mazda modified the fob (09-019/26). 2013–2017: when the fob or a door request switch does not work, or the locks keep cycling on approach, the repair checks the outer door-handle connector for corrosion (SA-040/17).[28][29]
Liftgate faults (U.S. data)
Bulletins cover a corroded opener-switch connector (2013–2014 built before October 2, 2013; 09-035/14), half-latching below freezing (2014–2016 built October 1, 2013 to February 28, 2015; 09-044/16), a liftgate that will not unlatch, diagnosed through door-lock data, with a corroded door lock/latch replaced (2013–2022; SA-050/22) and, on 2020–2024 power-liftgate models with the "7th generation" fob built before December 1, 2023, the fob's liftgate button pressed by accident in a pocket (09-022/24b, whose warranty note lists Canadian 2022–2024 CX-5s). Unverified owner complaints to NHTSA include 2015 liftgates falling on a person, power liftgates opening by themselves (2020, 2021, 2024), and a 2013 owner who can open the hatch only with the fob.[33][34][36][37][38][40][41][42][43]
Engine off but stuck in accessory mode (U.S. data)
A worn shifter switch (2013–2014 built before December 27, 2013; 05-004/16) or a shifter lock-release button sticking in the cold (2014–2016, and 2017–2018 built before April 2, 2018; 05-001/19) can leave the car in accessory mode. One 2014 owner told NHTSA the vehicle then could not be locked.[31][32][39]
Theft and key security
The CX-5 is not on Équité Association's top-10 most-stolen lists for Canada or Ontario from 2019 to 2024: not the main list for each year, and not the theft-frequency lists for Ontario (2022–2024) or Canada (2024). Absence from a top-10 list is not a theft rate.[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59]
Wired (2016, third-party news) reported that a list of keyless cars opened by a relay attack in a study by the German auto club ADAC included "Mazda's CX-5". The list focused on European models, and the article gives no model year.[60]

As of September 30, 2026, the Transport Canada and NHTSA databases list no door lock, key, fob, ignition, hood-latch or immobilizer recall for 2013–2026 models.
